It wasn't the answer she wanted or liked, but she knew it was the truth beyond all shadow of a doubt and Alain was right to speak it, even if it did make her want to cry. He was right: She had to know what she was doing, had to know why Cuthbert would loathe her and destroy any chance of even friendship between them. She wished he hadn't let go of her because without the warmth of another person she felt horribly alone.
"Thank you." Her eyes lowered to the floor and she bit her lip, avoiding the unbearable desire to curl her hands into fists. "I don't know - I don't know what I should do. But I suppose I'll know it when there's nothing left." No time, no more chances, nothing. "If it comes to that you'll be able to see it. Whatever happens, whatever it takes, you keep everyone away from me. I don't want to hurt anyone who doesn't deserve it, and no one can help me in that state other than Nariko. You'll have to leave me on my own." She let out a shaky, half terrified exhale. "If it comes to that."
And who was she kidding? It would come down to it no matter what.
"I'm also … I'm sorry for the other day. I was rude to you," When she cursed at him. "And thank you for not blaming either of them. They're idiots, especially Nariko, and I don't think they were meant to go about this in any other way. Even if you don't feel the same, and even if you are angry with them," She paused again, suddenly left vulnerable by all of this talk. "Thank you for not letting it make you hate them."
They both might die today so Kaine figured it might be a good idea to just push through till the end, which was exactly what she did. She had said everything she needed to the man.
